Labelmate CAT-3SA Sensor Arm Troubleshooting

View Labelmate CAT-3SA Sensor Arm

The Labelmate CAT-3SA Sensor Arm is an automatic label rewinder designed to collect printed label web into a roll as it leaves a printer. This guide applies to the selected Option: CAT-3SA-ACH, exact SKU 80-203-0027. The CAT-3SA-ACH uses expandable fingers to hold adjustable core diameters from 1 to 4 inches (25 to 101 mm), accepts media up to 6.5 inches (165 mm) wide and has an 11-inch (279 mm) maximum roll diameter.

Before observing a running web, keep hands, loose clothing, jewellery and unsecured hair clear of the roll and web path. Stop and isolate the equipment as required before clearing material, cleaning components or making adjustments.

Problem: The rewinder does not start and stop automatically with printer output

Labelmate CAT-3SA Sensor Arm — Option: CAT-3SA-ACH

Likely cause: The sensor arm is not accurately tracking the incoming label web. The CAT-3SA Sensor Arm uses the arm position to control automatic rewinding in response to printer output. Debris, adhesive residue or dust on sensor-arm surfaces can interfere with consistent tracking. Calibration can also be required to maintain accurate tension tracking for the media type and thickness in use.

Safe corrective action

  1. Safely stop the printer and rewinder before handling the web path.
  2. Inspect the sensor-arm surfaces for label debris, adhesive residue and dust.
  3. Clean the sensor arm, core holder and flanges after the media change so accumulated contamination does not affect the next rewind cycle.
  4. Confirm that the label web is routed so the sensor arm can track the incoming material without obstruction.
  5. Calibrate the sensor arm using the procedures in the included user manual and data sheet that apply to the installed media type and thickness.
  6. Restart the workflow and observe whether the rewinder again begins and stops in step with printer output.

When to escalate

Contact our team if automatic operation remains inconsistent after cleaning and the applicable sensor-arm calibration procedure. Escalate where the arm cannot track the web freely or where a production interruption continues after these checks.

Problem: The label web is too tight, slack or winds unevenly

Sensor Arm Rewinders

Likely cause: Incorrect sensor-arm tracking or an unsuitable speed and torque setting can affect web tension and roll formation. The CAT-3SA Sensor Arm provides adjustable speed and torque control, while its sensor arm is intended to prevent excessive tension on the label web. Debris on the sensor-arm surfaces, core holder or flanges may also affect subsequent rewinding cycles.

Safe corrective action

  1. Safely stop the equipment and inspect the web for slack, excessive pull or uneven build across the roll.
  2. Check that the core is securely held by the CAT-3SA-ACH expandable-finger core holder and that the web is centred for the rewind path.
  3. Remove accumulated debris, adhesive residue and dust from the core holder, flanges and sensor-arm surfaces.
  4. Use the CAT-3SA Sensor Arm’s adjustable speed and torque controls to suit the observed web handling requirement.
  5. Calibrate the sensor arm according to the included user manual and data sheet for the current media type and thickness.
  6. Resume operation and watch the web through normal printing. A satisfactory result is a consistently controlled web and an even, stable roll rather than intermittent slack or excessive tension.

When to escalate

Contact our team when uneven winding, unstable tracking or excessive web tension continues after cleaning, secure core holding, appropriate control adjustment and calibration. Do not attempt internal repair while the equipment is in service.

Problem: The finished roll does not build neatly or approaches the rewinder limit

CAT-3SA-1-INCH

Likely cause: The CAT-3SA-ACH is rated for a maximum roll diameter of 11 inches (279 mm), a maximum roll weight of 20 lb (9 kg) and a maximum media width of 6.5 inches (165 mm). A roll that approaches these limits requires close observation of the roll build and web tracking. An off-centre web or contamination on the core holder and flanges can also contribute to an uneven outer roll edge.

Safe corrective action

  1. Before operation, verify that the intended media width, finished-roll diameter and roll weight are within the CAT-3SA-ACH limits.
  2. Secure the correct core using the adjustable expandable-finger holder for the core diameter in use.
  3. Keep the web centred during the rewind path and inspect the growing roll for a level, stable build.
  4. After changing media, safely clean the core holder and flanges to remove debris, adhesive residue and dust.
  5. Stop the workflow before the finished roll exceeds the 11-inch maximum diameter or 20 lb maximum roll weight.

When to escalate

Contact our team if the roll cannot be kept centred and stable within the stated media, roll-diameter and roll-weight limits, or if the core holder does not hold the selected core securely.

Problem: Labels skip, drift in print position or feed inconsistently

Likely cause: A rewinder sensor-arm issue concerns take-up tension and rewind speed, whereas printer media registration determines where individual labels start and end. A Labelmate CAT-3SA Sensor Arm can manage the outgoing label web, but it cannot correct a printer registration issue or a mismatch between the media’s registration format and the printing workflow.

Safe corrective action

  1. Observe whether the label web is taut, centred and winding evenly at the rewinder.
  2. If rewind tension and roll formation are stable but printed labels still skip or drift, separate the printer registration issue from the rewinder diagnosis.
  3. Review the printer and media workflow for the registration method used by the installed labels, such as gap/notch or black-mark registration.
  4. Maintain safe separation from the moving roll and web path while observing live operation.

When to escalate

Contact our team when the source of the problem cannot be distinguished between printer media registration and rewind handling, or when the label web remains unstable despite the CAT-3SA-ACH checks in this guide.
